YOUR NEW BAMBOO
Choose the right bamboo for your purpose. There are over 1000 species of bamboo . We deal only with CLUMPING bamboos which are Non-Invasive in the landscape. Bamboo's range from small ground cover to over 100 feet in height. They are ideal for privacy screens, garden specimen plantings and/or focal points. Growing three times faster than most woody plants/trees, bamboo can fill your needs quickly and beautifully.
PICKING THE RIGHT LOCATION
Most bamboos prefer sunny areas and require some sun exposure for a portion of the day. Bamboo likes to be well drained and while they need to be kept moist, they will not tolerate sitting in water. When a bamboo becomes too dry the leaves will fold closed as a sign of stress, just like the blades of grass in your lawn. They can adapt to many soil types and have a very strong will to live and can surprisingly survive under most conditions. However, with a little care a good dose of fertilizer at least once every three months, and proper water, they will not only survive but flourish into a magnificicant plant.
PLANTING YOUR BAMBOO
Do not plant in the heat of the day in warm months as this will contribute to the stress of your bamboo. Dig a hole 50% deeper than your pot and twice the diameter. If the soil is poor, add an organic matter or good potting mix and mix with soil in hole. Remove carefully from the container, not to damage any new culms that may be emerging. If root bound, cut away the pot and break away and separate from sides and bottom of plant. Place plant in hole with top of plant soil level with ground surface, back fill with soil, fill with potting soil, water well. Mulch plant a few inches thick to retain water and for heat/cold protection.
CARE FOR YOUR NEW BAMBOO
Water daily for a couple of weeks (do not drown!). Once plant appears established, cut back watering to once a week or as needed. Usually a deep watering twice a week in Spring and Summer - less in winter months. Fertilize 3-4 times a year with a high quality slow release fertilizer. As your bamboo matures, each new culm will be larger than the first until it reaches its full maturity size (approximately 2 years in age). Your bamboo will Sleep-Creep-Leap with good care giving you years of enjoyment with this fascinating, environmentally friendly plant!
